Scandalous!

"Evelyn Nesbit Thaw
(same as Evelyn Nesbitt Thaw, Mrs. Harry K. Thaw and Mrs. Thaw)

Born 25 December 1884 in Tarentum, Pennsylvania, USA, as Florence Evelyn Nesbit.
Died 17 January 1967 in a nursing home in Santa Monica, California, USA.

Married Harry K. Thaw 4 April 1905; son Russell William Thaw, born 25 October 1910 (paternity denied by Harry Thaw, who was in prison), died 1984; divorced circa 1915. Married vaudeville dancer Jack Clifford 1916; separated 1918; divorced 1933.

Evelyn Nesbit Thaw began modeling for artists in her early teens to support her widowed mother and siblings, eventually moving with her family to New York where she became the inspiration for The Gibson Girl as illustrated by Charles Dana Gibson. She extended her career into stage work as a chorus girl on Broadway, catching the eye of Madison Square Garden architect Stanford White, a notorious womanizer 30+ years her senior. Evelyn Nesbit was courted by a young John Barrymore, by whom she twice became pregnant, but would not marry him — largely due to Evelyn’s continued fascination with White and the influence of her money-conscious mother. Evelyn eventually became the wife of Pennsylvania railroad and coal fortune heir Harry K. Thaw, who became the jealous murderer of Stanford White in the roof theatre of Madison Square Garden on 25 June 1906. The murder was a nationwide scandal, and a number of films were made reenacting the details made public from Harry Thaw’s two murder trials for curious motion picture audiences.

Evelyn Nesbit Thaw worked again as a vaudeville dancer, drawing on her notoriety for a modest living, and starred in her debut film with her young son Russell in 1914. Evelyn continued sporatically in motion pictures from 1916 through 1919, making her final film in 1922. She attempted suicide in the mid-1920s to escape financial destitution.

Evelyn eventually received a modest $10,000 inheritance from the will of her former husband Thaw after his 22 February 1947 heart attack death in Miami, Florida. Evelyn Nesbit Thaw’s life was the inspiration of the film The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing (1955), portrayed by Joan Collins, and she was the basis of a fictionalized character in the film Ragtime (1981), adapted from E.L. Doctorow’s novel, portrayed by Elizabeth McGovern.

Happy Birthday To Me--Bright Eyes

"All eyes on the calendar
Another year I claim of total indifference
To here, the days pile up
With decisions to be made, I'm sure all of them were wrong
Into this song I send myself
And with these drinks I plan to collapse
And forget this wasted year, these wasted years
Devoted friends, they disappear
And I'm sorry about the phone call and needing you
Some decisions you don't make
I guess it's just like breathing or not wanting to
There are some things you can't fake
I guess that it's typical
To cling to memories you'll never get back again
And to sort through old photographs
Of a summer long ago or a friend that you used to know
And there below
His frozen face
You wrote the name and that ancient date, that ancient date
And you can't believe that he's really gone
When all that's left is a fucking song and
I'm sorry about the phone call; and waking you.
I know that it is late,
But thank you for talking, because I needed to.
Some things just can't wait."

I was meaning to post this I totally forgot. Great song. Love Bright Eyes.

Fresh Inspiration

Amazing. I've always loved the photo of the Steel Workers sitting on that piece of steel in the sky having lunch while building the Empire State Building. Lewis Hine is AMAZING!

"
"HINE, Lewis Wickes
b. 26 September 1874; d. 3 November 1940

Lewis Hine was an American sociologist who took up photography in 1905 and used it as a documentary tool, to show the working class conditions of the poor immigrants from Europe. From 1911- 1916 he toured the US as official photographer for the National Labor Committee, where he depicted in a sensitive and heart-rending manner the plight of children working in the mills. He often hid his camera so that he could take authentic photographs, and had first to learn how to get a presentable picture without using flash.

Hine met with considerable opposition from the employers, who accused him of muck-raking. Sometimes he was banned from the premises, on other occasions the children were hidden from view when he arrived. On occasions Hine even posed as a fire inspector, Bible salesman or insurance agent in order to gain access to the premises! Where he was banned from premises, he would photograph the children arriving at or leaving the factory. Being anxious to provide evidence that could not be discredited, he even measured the children by the buttons on his jacket, having measured their height. In 1916-1917 he travelled some fifty thousand miles in his quest.

Hine discovered and exposed some appalling conditions, such as children aged six or seven having to work as many as twelve hours a day. Some of his prints have comments on the back, recording the circumstances. One reads "Sandie Fiefer, 10; South Carolina", another "Mart Payne, picks 20 lbs. cotton a day."

"I wanted to show things that had to be corrected", Hine declared. He produced several thousands of pictures. It was not until the 1930s that his work bore fruit, and child labour became controlled.

In 1910 he wrote saying: "I am sure I am right in my choice of work. My child labor photos have already set the authorities to work to see if such things can be possible, They try to get around the issue by crying forgery, but that is the value of the dates and the witnesses."

Owen Lovejoy, General Secretary of the NCLC and Hine's contracting supervisor, wrote: "The work that you did under my direction was more responsible than any or all other efforts to bring the facts or conditions of child labor employment to public attention."

The picture shows a little girl having a glimpse outside. Some of Hine's most evocative pictures are to be found at http://www.historyplace.com/unitedstates/childlabor/index.html" From here> All the pics I snagged from various websites via Google images.

Daily Heart On

A cute bunny light!
Last night my cat committed a heinous crime. The screeches from whatever she captured and ate alive woke me and the dogs up. I also had a run in with a coyote behind our house when I took the dogs on a walk. The cat followed the dogs and I for a bit and the coyote was on the hill not too far away and was coming towards the cat so I tossed some rocks towards it to try to deter it. The coyote ended up strolling away on it's own. They were screeching like crazy banshee's last night.

Songs: Ohia - Being In Love

"being in love means you are completely broken
then put back together the one piece that was yours
is beating in your lovers breast
she says the same thing about hers(x2)
however I have gotten here I have plans to be with you
and for the first time it is working(x3)
and I am proof that the heart is a risky fuel to burn
yeah, we are proof that the heart is a risky fuel to burn
what's left after that's all gone I hope to never learn
but if you stick with me you can help me
I'm sure we'll find new things to burn
cause we are proof that the heart is a risky fuel to burn
yeah, we are proof that the heart is a risky fuel to burn"

I love this song SO SO MUCH. The heart is a risky fuel to burn.
